Construction is one of the last industries with widespread paper check usage. Many general contractors and subcontractors pay workers weekly by check. Formal payroll software is less common at smaller construction firms, and many workers receive checks directly from a job foreman or site supervisor. Pay period: The date range this check covers, such as November 4-10 or the week of November 7.

Medicare (1.45%): $12.76. State income tax (Texas: $0 -- no state income tax): $0. Net pay: $724.68. Year-to-date figures track the running total across all pay periods since January 1.

That $880 gross figure is what landlords and lenders use for income threshold calculations -- not the $724.68 take-home. If this worker is paid weekly and applies for an apartment at $650/month, his $3,813/month gross ($880 x 4.33) easily clears the standard 3x threshold ($1,950/month needed) with room to spare.

Check Stubs and Loan Applications

Workers in cash-intensive industries often find that their loan applications require more documentation than workers in formal employment situations. A bank extending a personal loan, an auto lender, or a mortgage company all want to see documented, consistent income. Check stubs -- whether generated or issued by an employer -- provide that documentation.

For auto loans in particular, dealers and financing companies are accustomed to working with self-employed and informal workers. Bringing a set of check stubs covering the past three months, along with bank statements showing consistent deposits, is often sufficient for a car loan approval even when the income comes from informal or variable sources.

Personal loans through banks and credit unions are similarly workable with check stub documentation. What if my employer doesn't give me check stubs?
